Weei.com has the New England Patriots listed at #10 in their NFL power rankings. Two questions here;1.) When did EEI start doing power rankings?
2.) Do the Patriots really deserve to be at #10?
Let's start with letting you read their reasoning...
"(3) Brady doesn’t look comfortable in the pocket, and teams are going after No. 12 hard. It’s inevitable that future opponents will copy the Jets’ strategy and continue to pressure Brady and the offensive line. Let’s see how the the Pats respond Sunday when they face another tough test in the Falcons. Look for the Patriots to run the ball more and take advantage of their solid running backs, as I think Belichick realizes Brady has thrown the ball far too much over the past two games. The Patriots sit at No. 10 at this point, but by midseason Brady should be back in his groove and the defense will improve."
A couple of points here. Brady doesn't look comfortable in the pocket in week #2 because he missed an entire NFL season. he was on the sidelines while Matty Cassel was taking snaps, actually he wasn't even on the sidelines. You think any one of us armchair quarterbacks have any idea how fast an NFL game is really played? Must be hard to keep that sense about you when you're out for an entire season. Brady will be back to his usual self sooner then mid-season.
I also think his struggles are being overstated. He had a bad game. He's had games where he's thrown four picks in one game and nobody screamed bloody murder like they are doing now. Be patient with the guy and he will deliver.
As for the defense, maybe I am naive, but what was wrong with the defense. Mark Sanchez played very well and got the ball into some very tight spots. ALSO, the defense gave up only 3 points in the first half and aside from the two drives that the Jets managed to get some solid yardage did a pretty good job at containing the young, explosive offense. This is a defense that has yet to have anytime to gel together that did this. Imagine where we will be in two or three weeks.
The Patriots will be fine. Have we any reason to doubt a Bill Belichick coached team? Even with Tom Brady last year they went a very strong 11-5 and SHOULD HAVE made the playoffs. This season is NOT a wash two games in, so I invite everyone to stop acting like it is.

This weekend the New England Patriots will be back in the Meadowlands to take on the NY Jets with Tom Brady under center for the first time in over a year and they will be ready. The team isn't talking much, because as is usual with this team, they let the opponents run their hole for the run up to the game and they will do their talking on the field. As if Tom Brady and company needed more bulletin board material, let's revisit some of the ridiculous statements that Rex Ryan has made about the New England Patriots in his first off season of his career with the Jets. He obviously came in with the intention to stir the pot.
"I never came here to kiss Bill Belichick's rings," Ryan said Wednesday in an interview on WFAN. "I came here to win, let's put it that way.... I'm certainly not intimidated by or anybody else."
“People think that New England, well this is a win for them,” Ryan said. “Oh, yeah? They’ve won eight in a row at the Meadowlands. So, you’ve got all that information. You’ve got that history, but I’m not conceding anything. I promise you, we are going to give everything we have, and I’m sure New England is going to give everything they have. If they don’t, that’s fine with me. But at the end of the day, we’ll see who the better team is right now.
“And again, I have a lot of confidence in our football team.”
"We will hit him more than six times (like Buffalo did). I promise you that," Rhodes told the N.Y. Daily News. "I'm sure if somebody is around his leg, or he feels pressure below, he's not going to step into his throw."
Tom Brady, in his usual Tom Brady way, dismissed all the chatter, saying "talk is cheap."
If the Patriots come out and play the way they did in the second half against the Bills on Sunday they will likely come home with their ninth win in a row at the Meadowlands, but if they play like they played in the first half against the Bills, the streak might be in danger.
One thing is for sure, you won't hear any talk from the Patriots organization, but you might...from their fans.
GO PATS!!

Today at a press conference in Foxboro a New England Patriot legend has announced his retirement from the gridiron. In 1996 when the Pats drafted Tedy "Beercan" Bruschi in the third round no one would have guessed we'd be talking this way about him 13 seasons later. Heck we were all too busy talking about how great Terry Glenn was going to be, and "she" was for awhile. The linebacker from the University of Arizona went from special teams captain to captain of the entire defense in just a few short seasons. 1,110 tackles 30.5 sacks and 12 INTs are numbers that could and should get him into the Hall, and not just the Hall at Patriot Place either. At first glance those numbers don't wow you, but when you dig into his career, he is the only player in NFL history to return four consecutive INT's for touchdowns, he was the defensive captain on 2 of 3 Super Bowl winning teams. But numbers are not what we will remember most about Tedy Bruschi. After one of the greatest seasons in Patriots history, only days after winning the third championship in four years all of Pats nation stood stunned to learn that Bruschi had a stroke and was in the hospital in Boston. He was suffering from a heart defect which caused the mild stroke, and many at this point were just hoping he would walk out of that hospital again never mind come back and play for the Pats.
Though he would announce that he would sit out the entire 2005 season, Tedy was cleared to play in October and with the heart of a Patriot, and with the nervousness of us all watching, Tedy came back and played against the Buffalo Bills Oct 29th on national TV and wound up winning the defensive player of the week. He would go on to win Comeback Player of the Year that season, and of course play THREE more seasons with New England, something many thought was not possible. That heart and determination is what we will remember most.
Tedy "Beercan" Bruschi is a New England Patriot, and at age 36 he has done everything a football player can do. He is retiring with his head held high, he will not go down as the greatest linebacker there was, but he will be in my mind one of the greatest New England Patriots I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

B.J.Raji in a Pats uniform. I can dream right? Scotty Dukes and I always attend the Patriots Drafy Party at Gillette Stadium. A great take by the way if you can make it. This year I will not be in attendance due to a family celebration. Although I will be hoping with my toes crossed that the Pats get a chance to flirt with the idea of bringing BJ aboard. As of late he is projected to go as early as pick #8 in the first round. Nice work if you can get it.The Pats have the 23rd selection in the opening round. All hope is not lost though, after they deal off Cassel to Detroit or Kansas City it would be possible. Possible. Bill Belichick never does what I expect or want for that matter. So why start now? The Pats are never high on going top 5 anyway due to the signing bonuses. We'll get Darry Beckwith. Just a guess from Nostradumbass.
6'2'', 338 lbs, 5.1 40YD - I'll take it. Ron Brace is available too by the way. I know, I am a total homer. We'll see on April 25th, a lot could happen between now and then, Manny might even get a job.

Well it didn't take long for the rest of the NFL to come calling on the intelligence that surrounds the New England Patriots. Belichick's disciples are always hot commodities and this time around it is the young and talented Josh McDaniels. McDaniels at just 32 years old is taking over a team that has had the same head coach for the last 14 years which in the NFL is about 4 lifetimes! Now, it is a good position for McDaniels as he has a young, strong armed QB and some talented wide outs. What remains to be seen is whether or not he can handle the entire job of being a head coach in the NFL. Moreover taking on the pressure of replacing the greatest head coach the Denver Broncos franchise has ever had . Best of luck to Josh McDaniels, he'd better hope he is better than the last three of Belichick's disciples.
Now onto the important stuff...who the hell is gonna replace him?! With McDaniels gone the Pats are forced to replace an offensive coordinator and a QB coach. It was well known that McDaniels and the Pats QB's all got along very well. The task of finding someone to fill that void will be up to the most trusted man in New England sports today. So we leave it to you Bill "pick us a winna dude"!

With just a few minutes left to go in the 4th quarter, down by three, Matt Cassel was driving the New England Patriots down the field for his first game winning drive since he took over the reigns from Tom Brady. Only one problem, Dave Thomas, no not the founder of Wendy's, but ok, for argument sake we'll call him David Thomas. He was the man who's late hit would end the Patriots hopes of sole possession of first place and made next week's game against the Bills (which I am going to) a big one indeed. It's easy to put it all on that one play, but there were many other things that happened in last nights 18-15 loss to the Colts that you could point to as well. Whether it was Jabar Gafney dropping a SURE touchdown toss from Cassel or the fact that the Patriots never once tested Indy deep with Randy or even the challenge that Bill Belichick lost to rid the Patriots of a time out that they desperately could've used at the end of last nights game. Point to any of these things, but there's really just one thing to say, the Patriots under Matt Cassel are not the Patriots under Tom Brady.
Don't get me wrong, Matt Cassel was good and the offense looked like it had finally figured something out (with the notable exception of no deep balls to Randy) but if this was a Tom Brady team, it wouldn't have been close. The way the Colts are playing this season, with Tom Brady under center, the Oil Can would've been empty by the third quarter.
That being said, I understand we're not lucky enough to have MVP TFB under center this season. So here's hoping that what Bobby Kraft told John Madden last night is true, Tom Brady is recovering nicely and is right on schedule, because 2009 never looked so good.
More on the game tonight on Wicked Pissa Dude Radio (check back early tomorrow morning for a new episode.)

Now that we’ve all had some freak out time, let’s take a deep breath and evaluate the situation a little more closely. The situation I am talking about of course is the loss of Tom Brady for the rest of the season. It is now official. As of 3p this afternoon, Coach Belichick announced that the NFL MVP will not be returning to the starting lineup for the New England Patriots this season. In his usual, we’re moving on, attitude, Bill Belichick didn’t let on if he was panicked, but it’s quite obvious that he is concerned.
Whatever you think is the future of the New England Patriots, one thing is for sure they will be plugging along with Matt Cassel under center. From listening to Coach Belichick’s press conference this afternoon it is clear that they are not looking to bring another quarterback into the mix and that at this point they are moving forward with Matt Cassel and Kevin O’Connell.

I think this is a good move, not that I would ever question a Belichick move, but I am fully behind this move. For one, Cassel knows the system and has been studying under the best quarterback in the history of the NFL for the last couple of years. Kevin O’Connell was the captain of his San Diego State team in his freshman year. He will take some time to acclimated to the system, but he will be ready to go if called upon.
We don’t want Daunte Culpepper.
We don’t want Chris Simms.
We don’t want Tim Rattay.
We just want Matt Cassel to pick up where Tom Brady left off. Unrealistic? Maybe. But if he can control the game and not turn the ball over, we don’t need him to be the MVP, we just need him to win.
My new prediction, Patriots will finish the season 11-5. They will make the playoffs and win the Super Bowl. Call me crazy, but that’s my prediction and I’m sticking to it.

Should we rest him for one more week? With the Kansas City Chiefs coming into town this weekend and Tom Brady still a little banged up, how about we rest him for another week. Don’t think Matt Cassel can get the job done? Neither do I, but I think Kevin O’Connell can and he should get the snap. Last year, the Kansas City Chiefs were 4-12. In the pre-season this year they are 2-2. There is a quarterback controversy, in that they don’t know who they’ll be starting because they all suck. Larry Johnson isn’t what he used to be and besides, our defense can shoulder that burden if he comes out firing on all cylinders by some miracle.
So the real question mark, without Brady in the line-up would be the offense and whether or not Kevin O’Connell (who should start) can lead the charge against the Chiefs defense. What then of the Chiefs defense?
Last year, the Chiefs defense was the 13th ranked defense in the NFL. They gave up nearly 21 points per game, 130 rushing yds/game, 188 passing yds/game and 320 total yds/game. Let’s be realistic, these are not the ’07 Detroit Lions who ranked last in the league in overall defense, but they are also not the Steelers.
The Chiefs defense is a middle of the road crew of young guys who are hungry to get better, but that is, they need to get better.
I am not saying Kevin O’Connell and our offense would eat them alive, but I think we could squeak out a victory. Isn’t that all we need from the Patriots? A win? Give Tom Brady one extra week to heal and get ready for the Jets, after all, that’s gonna be a shoot out with Brett Favre. Hahahahahaahaha!!

After a long two weeks of nothing but team unity (Team USA) that is, tonight it was back to hometown pride and routing for the Red Sox and Patriots...not that I ever stopped routing for the home team, but for a couple of weeks the entire country was the hometeam. So, tonight I sat down to watch two of my favorite teams, the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. What a night, right? Flipping between baseball and football while enjoying a brew and relaxing after a long week of work, it really doesn't get any better.
Let me start with the good. After a day off, the Red Sox finally got into the winning ways in Toronto as they dropped the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-4. On the bats of Jason Varitek and Dustin Pedroia who each sent one out of the Rogers Center, the Red Sox grabbed a much needed win.

For his part, Paul Byrd looked solid and finished with a line of 6 innings, 6 hits, 4 runs and 4 SO's.
Was this a must win for the Red Sox? No. Was it a nice win to get? You better believe it. With the Rays looking back and laughing at the rest of the pack, now would be as good a time as any to make a run at the top spot in the AL East.
Here's the boxscore for the game.
And so then, what about the woeful New England Patritos? That's right I just spoke about our beloved Patriots and called them woeful. Let me put it out there right now, this dreaful start that the Patriots are having is NOT a result of Tom Brady not being in the starting line-up. Sure it hurts the team, but Tom Brady has nothing to do with giving up TWO special teams touchdowns. He has nothing to do with Donovan McNabb throwing for 180 yards and a touchdown.
Of course, Tom Brady's absence did have something to do with the disasterous play of the offense, but it wasn't the only thing. Is Matt Cassel still on the team? Aparently he is going to be for a while, given that he played a majority of the game. Gutierrez looks like the odds on favorite
to be Brady's back-up this year especially after his "decent" showing tonight, 12-16, 199 yds. and two TDs. And Kevin O'Connell was no where to be found tonight, not sure what that's about, but I am sure Coach Belichick will not characterize that move at all.Overall, it was another poor performance from a team that is the odds on favorite to win the Super Bowl this year. I'm not sure I would book my tickets to Tampa just yet, let's give them a couple of series with Brady under center to see what happens.
Patriots fall 27-17 to the Eagles. Click here for the boxscore.
By the way, is it time to freak out yet? In case it is, here are the top 2 results from YouTube when I searched Freak Out. ENJOY!!

James Posey's agent announced today that the most coveted of all free agents on the market, James Posey has signed a deal with the New Orlean's Hornets for $25 mil. This begs the question, has Danny Ainge earned our respect enough for us not to question his judgement? I don't know. I mean if Belichick or Theo make a move, no one in the Boston area will ever question it. We might be pissed if Manny leaves after this year, but if Theo said it was the right thing, we would agree.
In this case though, can we really give Danny a pass? I don't think so. He made what, a couple of good moves last year? I know I know, he's a god for bringing KG and Ray Ray in along with the other role players, but that's ONE season. If he does it consistently and makes moves that will keep us contenders for an extended amount of time, then he'll earn that right. For now, Mr. Ainge, talk to me at the end of the 2008-2009 season when we have ring #2 and you will have Theo/Billy status, but until then get on the free agent market my friend and find a replacement for Posey.
As for Posey, James, you weren't a Celtic for nearly long enough. You were a superstah in our eyes and we will be forever greatful for the things that you did to help us win Banner #17. Go ahead man, get your money. Enjoy NO and maybe we'll see you in the playoffs...probably not.

The first quarter of this game was one of ups and downs. The Celts went on a run, the Pistons went on a run and back and forth we went until the buzzer sounded and the end of half score is Celtics 41 Pistons 40.
As a side note, this is why Boston is the City of Champions. As we are watching the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals, the commentators are also mentioning how they were at Fenway Park last night for Jon Lester's no-hitter. This stuff doesn't happen in New York or LA. THIS is the City of Champions and we prove it night in and night out. I LOVE IT!
Back to the game and for me the headline of the half was Ray Allen. No he hasn't lit it up like everyone had hoped tonight, but he has become more agressive. He has taken the ball to the hole and knocked down a few, including a very pretty finger roll down the middle of the lane and Allen has also driven the lane and kicked it out creating for his teamates. I think the media should lay off Ray Allen and let him shoot his way out of this slump. Tonight, you can feel him clawing out of it and mark my words he is going to have a break out game #2 (maybe even in the second half, more on that to come.)
